Recently, someone asked me why Vanguard had positioned itself so closely to art, adopting the
"inspired by art, designed for living" motto, as well as including original artworks in each of our projects.
Many may think that the decision was absolutely rational; a way of differentiating the company within our market segment. That answer would be totally legitimate and make perfect sense.
However, this was not the case.
In the mid-1970s, as a young boy, I once visited a hospital complex built by a close relative, who was very dear to me. I still have vivid memories of touring the new premises and being surprised by an impressive Malhoa artwork in the reception area. As I climbed the stairs, I noticed that all the other floors had original panels by the most renowned Portuguese ceramists of the era. Although that was unusual, in itself, what I really want to share is the emotion I felt. Despite having the good fortune to grow up surrounded by art, at that moment, I still felt a childish delight and happiness that left an indelible mark, which has stayed with me to this day.
Whatever the justifications to explain our option, it is this story that inspires me most. This is the story I want to share with our future residents and those involved in our various projects. Similarly, we also seek to imbue each issue of Portico with such an element of surprise and spirit of discovery.
I hope you enjoy it!
