Hands over the City

Investigations in the Urban Environment exhibition organised by Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Serralves Foundation

On 23rd January, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) and the Serralves Foundation together inaugurated the Hands over the City — Investigations in the Urban Environment exhibition, which will be on display until 7th April 2024 at the Amélia de Mello Foundation Gallery, located at the university’s main campus in Lisbon.

Offering a selection of works by Portuguese and international artists found in the Serralves Collection, the exhibits explore contemporary urban reality, investigating the physical, economic, social and cultural processes that shape city life.

Combining a variety of artistic forms, such as drawing, collage, sculpture, photography, billboards, sound works and videos, this exhibition boasts pieces from the late 1960s to the present day, spanning the period covered by the Serralves Collection. Among the artists represented are Ana Hatherly, Ana Santos, André Cepeda, Dayana Lucas, James Lee Byars, Mauro Cerqueira, Oficina Arara, Pierre Huyghe, Tacita Dean, VALIE EXPORT and Yonamine.

Curated by Joana Valsassina, this event is the third initiative organised as part of the UPC’s membership of the Serralves Foundation Founders. It is also part of the Serralves Collection Touring Exhibition Programme, which aims to make the Foundation's collection accessible to different audiences throughout the country.
