“Between Your Teeth”

Paula Rego and Adriana Varejão

at Centro de Arte Moderna – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian

The CAM (Centro de Arte Moderna) in Lisbon is set to host a compelling exhibition titled "Paula Rego and Adriana Varejão: Between Your Teeth" from April 11 to September 22, 2025. This exhibition brings together approximately 100 works by two distinguished artists: the late Portuguese-British painter Paula Rego (1935–2022) and contemporary Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão (b. 1964). Curated by Adriana Varejão, Helena de Freitas, and Victor Gorgulho, the exhibition aims to explore the thematic intersections in their art, particularly focusing on representations of violence in both political and private realms.

A highlight of the exhibition is Rego's rarely displayed painting, "A Primeira Missa no Brasil" ("The First Mass in Brazil") from 1993, which serves as a pivotal piece in the dialogue between the two artists' works. The exhibition's title, "Between Your Teeth," is inspired by a poem by Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst, reflecting the intimate and sometimes unsettling themes explored in both artists' creations.

Visitors can expect a thought-provoking experience that delves into the complexities of power dynamics, gender, and cultural narratives as interpreted by Rego and Varejão. This exhibition not only highlights their individual artistic achievements but also offers a comparative perspective that enriches the understanding of contemporary art across different cultures and generations.

For those interested in attending, the exhibition will be held at the Nave of the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian. Additional information, including details on guided tours and related events, can be found on the Gulbenkian Museum's official website.
